Legal Intern
Every year, opportunities are provided for law students to apply for available positions during Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. The program is designed to maximize student involvement with the prosecution of crimes as the department continually strives to uphold the laws of the State of Hawai‘i. Commitments can be full or part-time, however, full-time (Monday – Friday) applicants are preferred for the Summer semester.
The length of each internship will vary based on each student’s availability and course scheduling. Work hours and days, as well as start and end dates, will be arranged between the student and the assigned supervisor. To ensure adequate exposure and in-depth experience, regular attendance will be expected. The following timelines are for each semester:
- Summer: Beginning of June to the end of July
- Fall: Mid-August to mid-November
- Spring: Mid-January to mid-April
– Responsibilities
The program offers a variety of challenging experiences that reflect the demands and rewards of public service. Legal interns will be assigned various tasks, including, but not limited to:
- Legal research and analysis
- Drafting legal memoranda
- Attending court hearings
- Observing trials and pre-trial hearings
- Visiting various law enforcement and correction facilities
– Compensation
Internship positions for the Fall and Spring semesters are nonpaying volunteer positions. During the Summer semester, the Department will accept multiple interns and may offer several paid positions to select candidates pending budget availability. Interns who receive compensation will not receive course credit for the period that they are paid. Candidates are encouraged to seek and apply for grants from their school or other sources, and to request course credit where available.
