Man found guilty of assaulting police officer

HONOLULU, HI – A Circuit Court jury found Hokuokalani Patoc, 40, guilty today of Assault in the First Degree for hitting a Honolulu police officer on the head with a metal object before fleeing in the officer’s subsidized police vehicle and refusing police commands to stop.

The injured officer responded to a reported road rage incident in Lā‛ie shortly after 5 a.m. on February 16, 2023. He arrived on Iosepa Street to find Patoc standing in the road next to a vehicle. The officer exited his vehicle to access the situation when Patoc hit the officer with a car jack stand extension causing scalp lacerations, skull fractures, and subdural hemorrhages.

Patoc then stole the officer’s vehicle and fled through Kahuku, Hale‛iwa, Wahiawa, and into downtown Honolulu. He ignored an officer who used his siren and flashing lights in an attempt to stop Patoc. Patoc eventually stopped and was arrested in front of ‛Iolani Palace.

“This was an unprovoked attack on a police officer performing his duty to protect the public. Thankfully, he is recovering but still hasn’t returned to work,” said Prosecuting Attorney Steve Alm.

Patoc had been charged with Attempted Murder in the First Degree, but the jury found him guilty of the lesser offense of Assault in the First Degree. Assault in the First Degree is a class B felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Patoc was also found guilty of Unauthorized Control of a Propelled Vehicle in the First Degree, a class C felony punishable by up to 5 years in prison, and Resisting An Order to Stop Motor Vehicle in the Second Degree, a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in prison.

A hearing to determine whether Patoc is eligible for an extended sentence as a multiple offender will be held Tuesday, January 23.

Felony Team Captain and Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Lawrence Sousie successfully prosecuted the case.

Brown and Dandurand both sentenced to life in prison

HONOLULU, HI – Stephen Brown, 29, and Hailey Dandurand, 26, both received sentences in Honolulu Circuit Court yesterday that include life in prison with the possibility of parole for murdering Telma Boinville on December 7, 2017.

Boinville had a part-time job cleaning homes including a home on Ke Iki Road in Pupukea on O‛ahu’s North Shore. Boinville and her then eight-year-old daughter stopped at the home, and when Boinville went inside she found Brown and Dandurand burglarizing the home. Brown and Dandurand tied up and killed Boinville, then tied up her daughter and left the scene in Boinville’s truck. They were arrested in Mililani several hours later.

Brown was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole for Murder in the Second Degree. He was also sentenced to 20 years in prison for Kidnapping, an extended term of 20 years in prison for Burglary in the First Degree, and 30 days in jail for Criminal Property Damage in the Fourth Degree. The sentences will be served consecutively.

Dandurand was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole for Murder in the Second Degree and a separate extended term of life in prison with the possibility of parole for Kidnapping. She was also sentenced to an extended term of 20 years in prison for Burglary in the First Degree, an extended term of 10 years in prison for Unauthorized Possession of Confidential Personal Information, and a year in prison for Unauthorized Entry into Motor Vehicle in the Second Degree.  The sentences for Murder in the Second Degree, Kidnapping, and Burglary in the First Degree were ordered to run consecutively with each other.  The sentences for Unauthorized Entry into Motor Vehicle in the Second Degree and Unauthorized Possession of Confidential Personal Information were ordered to run concurrently with the consecutive term sentences for the other offenses.

“These lengthy sentences are deserved. Mr. Brown and Miss Dandurand committed horrific crimes and will now do significant time in prison,” said Prosecuting Attorney Steve Alm.

“We are appreciative the judge recognized the seriousness of these crimes and ordered the sentences to be served consecutively. We are grateful to the jury that found the defendants guilty. We thank HPD for gathering the evidence needed to prove them guilty. We also thank members of the public who helped the police track down the suspects. And we are inspired by the courage of Telma Boinville’s daughter who provided key testimony at Brown’s trial and again at Dandurand’s trial,” Alm said.

Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Scott Bell successfully prosecuted both Dandurand and Brown.
